As we enter the season of gratitude and giving, there’s no better time to celebrate the strong culture of volunteerism that thrives at Luther Manor. A not-for-profit, faith-based community in Wauwatosa, Luther Manor has dedicated itself for 60 years to serving older adults from the Milwaukee area and beyond. Our mission of sharing God’s love is lived out daily through the generosity, time and talents of both residents and community members who volunteer.
Volunteering after retirement offers so much more than simply filling time; it’s a chance to stay active, make new friends and create a lasting impact. Many find that volunteering brings a sense of accomplishment and well-being, connecting them deeply to their community. Studies show that volunteering benefits mental and emotional health, and at Luther Manor, the benefits of volunteering ripple outward, enriching everyone involved.
Luther Manor is home to over 200 dedicated volunteers who fill various roles, from helping out in the Great Room Café and resale shop to assisting with events, accompanying residents on field trips and providing companionship to those in hospice care. Whether guiding residents to activities, helping in life enrichment programs or simply being a compassionate friend, these volunteers are essential to the life and spirit of our community.
Luther Manor Volunteers Provide Heartfelt Service
Our volunteers come from all walks of life, each bringing unique gifts and stories. Long-time volunteer Dennis has helped with everything from casino nights to employee picnics and even gained retail experience working in Luther Manor’s on-campus convenience stores. The gratitude he receives from residents is all the compensation he needs. “I never imagined volunteering would make such a difference to others, but the smiles and thanks remind me every day why it’s so meaningful,” he said.
For those like Dennis who are volunteering after retirement, the connections they form are invaluable. Beyond just tasks, they’re building friendships and providing support, embodying the core of Luther Manor’s mission. Volunteer benefits are mutual — residents and volunteers alike find joy and purpose in each interaction, illustrating the benefits of volunteering firsthand.
Community Engagement and Partnerships Shine Brightly
Luther Manor also benefits from the commitment of local organizations and schools. Each year, Good Shepherd Catholic Church’s Matthew 25 Youth Camp Ministry brings students to volunteer throughout our campus, engaging in gardening, furniture moving and lively resident talent shows. Additionally, Divine Savior Holy Angels High School students participate in service days, bringing laughter and companionship to residents in Health Services through activities like apple peeling and games.
Luther Manor team members, too, go above and beyond in building connections. Allen, a member of our dining services team, has worked in Courtyard’s Kitchen, our assisted living dining room, for over 15 years. To many residents, he’s like a family member — sharing laughter, offering prayers and bringing comfort during difficult times. He knows that his work isn’t just a job; it’s an opportunity to serve others with compassion and kindness.
A Resource for Seniors and Families
Luther Manor extends its mission of service to the broader senior community with Laugh & Learn events. These monthly sessions cover essential topics such as “Busting the Myths of Hospice Care,” “Having Important Life Planning Conversations” and “Taking the Hassle Out of Downsizing & Moving.” Each session provides seniors and their families with practical insights to navigate aging confidently, whether they’re exploring senior living options, preparing for transitions or considering health care options.
