Making a move later in life is a big decision for anyone. Understandably, it comes with questions and concerns. If you’re considering a move to a senior living community, you may wonder, will I feel welcome and find friends? Will I find opportunities that appeal to me? Will I have a chance to get involved and contribute in meaningful ways? Will it provide what I need in the future?
These are all fantastic questions and worth asking. Finding the right senior living community takes time. Keep exploring. If you’re like Carlynn and Debra, who moved to Luther Manor a year ago, you’ll be glad you did.
“As a same-sex couple, we were looking for a place where we would be welcomed. That was very important to us,” said Carlynn. “We found that here at Luther Manor.”
Like Carlynn and Debra, you’ll find friends and neighbors at Luther Manor who hail from diverse backgrounds and have a wide variety of interests. Since residents help choose and direct the programs and activities, the opportunities are just as diverse, reflecting the personalities and interests of those who live here.
“For us, community is important. We were looking for a place that would provide the opportunity for community, particularly as we age. So that when we are of an age when we’re not going out as much, we’ll have places and people to be with right where we live,” explained Debra.
At last, no home repairs
Also, at the top of Carlynn and Debra’s list was not having to worry about the cost and burden of home repairs. The couple wanted to get away from managing all the maintenance — big and small.
“We’re very relieved to not have to worry about repairing a roof or changing a broken water heater or resurfacing the driveway,” said Carlynn. “Even though we had been living in a condo, we still had those issues, and we’re ready to be done with them.”
Deciding when to move to a senior living community
Even after you’ve identified the right senior living community, you have one more issue to consider. Deciding when to make a move is just as important as where. Move too soon and you may feel out of place. Move too late and you’ll have missed the best part of living in an active, supportive community of friends and neighbors.
Carlynn, an occupational therapist who specializes in orthopedic and neurological rehabilitation, brought a unique perspective to the decision-making process.
“I’ve seen families struggle with moving their loved ones into good, safe housing. We didn’t want our children to have to deal with that so we thought this is the right time,” she explained. “We’ll do it while we’re both in good health.”
Carlynn’s experience inspired the couple to plan ahead and move sooner rather than later so they could fully enjoy independent living in Wauwatosa through Luther Manor’s robust life enrichment programs, activities and amenities. Above all, they didn’t want to wait until the decision was out of their hands.
“While we were looking forward to giving up some of the obligations, and expectations and burdens of home ownership, we also looked forward to the added assistance here,” said Debra.
Carlynn agreed, “The continuum of care was especially important to us, as was a high quality of care, so we chose Luther Manor.”
