If you’re part of a couple, planning for the future presents special challenges. Along with typical questions — where will we fit in best, when should we move — you may have additional ones such as, how can we ensure both of us will have our needs met when the time comes? What if one of us needs care, temporarily or long term, and the other one is still active and independent?
A Life Plan community like Luther Manor offers a smart and elegant solution for couples. Whether you’re looking to move right now or just want to plan ahead to make sure you’re prepared for tomorrow’s what-ifs, Luther Manor offers a variety of senior living options, including independent living, supportive services, skilled care and assisted living in Wauwatosa, Wisconsin.
Stay active, connected
As we get older, it becomes harder to stay active, social and connected with others. With so many opportunities to offer, a Life Plan community makes it easy for couples to meet new people and enjoy activities and programs together as well as develop separate interests and friendships as individuals.
Consider moving sooner rather than later. The process of moving, settling in and forming relationships is easier as a couple. You’ll also have more time to enjoy the community’s amenities and establish routines that will carry you forward.
Less stress, more access
At a Life Plan community, the staff takes care of maintenance, yardwork and other chores leaving you more free time for creating special memories together or doing more of the everyday things you enjoy like taking a walk or having breakfast with friends.
Plus, at Luther Manor, you can request extra help with housekeeping, laundry, managing medications, bathing and dressing, and more for an additional fee. These supportive services allow couples to live together longer without having to make a move. In other words, one person doesn’t have to do all the housework and caregiving by themselves.
If one person ever does need a greater amount of care, it’s available onsite. The other spouse can continue to enjoy life independently while also receiving much-needed encouragement and support from friends and neighbors.
Marne shares her story
Luther Manor resident Marne Wilson and her now-late husband, Wayne, experienced one of the biggest benefits of moving to a Life Plan community — being close enough to see each other despite Wayne’s need for continuous care.
“When my husband needed skilled care, we moved to Luther Manor. He was in the health center, and I chose an independent living apartment at The Terrace. It was very convenient since we were basically living under the same roof, although in different sections of the building,” explained Marne. “He could join me for activities, church services and outings when he was able to, including an occasional dinner in the dining room.”
The staff even arranged for the Wilsons to attend a Milwaukee Brewers baseball game together as well as the Wisconsin State Fair. For Christmas, the couple hosted a special family celebration in one of Luther Manor’s community rooms.
“It was nice that even as he was living in the health center, Wayne had access to the outside world and fun things to do,” continued Marne. “I appreciated being able to visit him anytime and stay late, if I wanted to, without having to get into a car and drive.”
