As older adults and their families start to look for more support, a common question we hear is, “What’s the difference between assisted living and a nursing home?” They’re actually quite different and not at all interchangeable.
Assisted living provides occasional support as you need it
Assisted living is designed for people who need some supportive services to live on their own, typically in an assisted living apartment or suite. For example, maybe you or someone you love needs help managing medications, making meals, taking a shower or getting dressed in the morning. Maybe you need assistance getting to medical appointments. With assisted living, certified nursing assistants and caregiving aides provide care and support tailored to your needs and preferences.
While state regulations only require that communities provide up to three hours of nursing care per week, at Luther Manor nurses are on staff 24 hours a day to provide care and assistance as needed. It’s another way that Luther Manor goes above and beyond other communities to ensure you’re able to navigate your day confidently, safely and in control.
At Luther Manor, we offer two assisted living residential options — The Courtyards at Luther Manor in Wauwatosa, Wisconsin, and Luther Manor at River Oaks in Mequon, Wisconsin.
Since The Courtyards is located at Luther Manor’s main campus, residents enjoy being part of a large and vibrant community. There are extensive activities, amenities and programs, as well as restaurant-style dining and an old fashioned ice cream parlor.
Luther Manor at River Oaks is a small, boutique-style assisted living community set in a wooded area overlooking the Milwaukee River. It’s home to just 16 residents, which creates a relaxed, family atmosphere, and features a ranch-style design with an open kitchen, dining room and living room.
Nursing care involves around-the-clock support and medical attention
Skilled care is for someone who needs around-the-clock care and support, whether for a short stay after an injury or surgery or long-term such as for a significant disability, severe chronic illness or after a stroke. Registered nurses and caregiving aides provide care tailored to each person’s medical needs. At Luther Manor, Dr. Ismail Quryshi of Froedtert Hospital serves as our medical director, and Katie Lammi provides primary care as a nurse practitioner.
Luther Manor offers assisted living, nursing care and more
As a Life Plan community, Luther Manor offers a full continuum of care designed to support seniors as their needs change, starting with independent living in Wauwatosa. Outside your door, you’ll find an array of services, programs and amenities that encourage you to socialize, pursue your interests, try new things, take day trips and, in general, just enjoy life. If or when you need more support or even nursing care, it’s available for you right here at the community you know and love.
Not all senior living communities are the same. We know you have lots of questions. At Luther Manor, we’re pleased to be a trusted resource for the answers.
